What were MAKE asked to do?

Engage, the country’s leading urban living association, asked MAKE team to shape its annual Liverpool city centre residents’ conference. They wanted to provide a forum for those with an interest in the future of the city’s night-time economy to debate issues of licensing, nightlife and regulation, and to produce a response to the city’s emerging local plan.

How did MAKE do it?

  • We developed a keynote presentation addressing all the issues affected by the development of the evening and night-time economy in Liverpool city centre. Invitees included over 300 residents but also the local MP, senior councillors and officers, police and landowners.

  • The event took place at a high-profile venue – the Liverpool Echo Arena - to reflect the significance of the conference.

  • Moderators ran the event ensuring that all participants could contribute to the agenda and that nobody left having been unable to offer their ideas and concerns.

  • The outcomes of the sessions were captured, analysed and used in developing Engage’s response to the development of the city centre.

What happened next?

Engage submitted a comprehensive set of proposals to Liverpool City Council on issues around ‘agent of change’, noise, nuisance, diversity and building control.

What unique value did MAKE bring to this project?

Because of our encyclopedic knowledge of the evening and night-time economy (and our love of Liverpool), we ensured that the large audience was both entertained (having got up early on a Saturday morning to attend) and informed about the context of Liverpool’s issues as well as solutions to problems other cities have implemented around city centre living.
