Night-Time Strategies

Our view is that every town, city and borough should have a night-time strategy. Why? Because the night is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of planning and managing a city, yet it is a ‘low hanging fruit’ and improving it has the greatest potential to support your local economy and creativity, civic pride, community wellbeing and public safety.

Our holistic approach to creating a night-time strategy starts with a working group and progresses through widespread engagement, detailed research and concludes with a readable strategy and a highly deliverable action plan that all partners have bought into.

The MAKE night strategy method covers every nocturnal area, from night-time governance and policy reviews (to ensure night-time friendly city policy) to baseline audits of night-time data and night-time city walks with key partners (‘Carpe Noctem’). From safety and policing, through the visitor profile and experience, to the appeal of a place and its activity mix, as well as how the city manages its pedestrian flows, the provision of night-time transit and the legibility of the public realm after dark, we examine over 30 ‘facets of night’.

In short, we treat the night-time city as an ecosystem that we can audit and benchmark against other towns and cities worldwide so we can produce a bespoke after dark plan for your place that is inclusive and inspirational but also costed and deliverable.
